Extra Life

Privacy policy

Effective 19/10/2026

Extra Life does not collect your data. There is no account, no server, no analytics and no advertising. Everything you enter stays on your iPhone and in your own private iCloud storage, which only you can access. The developer never receives or sees any of it.

What Extra Life stores

To work, Extra Life keeps the following on your device:

If you are signed in to iCloud, Apple's CloudKit syncs this to your private iCloud database so it survives a reinstall or a new phone. Apple holds that copy under Apple's privacy policy. The developer has no access to your iCloud data. If you are not signed in to iCloud, everything stays on your iPhone only.

Calendar

Calendar access is optional and only requested if you turn it on. Extra Life reads your events between 4pm and 8pm, on your iPhone, for today and the next seven days. Today's first event goes in the afternoon nudge and the week ahead marks the evenings worth planning (a dinner, drinks, a birthday). It never changes your calendar and never sends your events anywhere. Event names appear only on your own phone. If you make a plan for an evening, the kind of event is saved with your plan; the event itself is not. iOS only offers apps full calendar access, but Extra Life reads nothing outside that window. You can turn this off in Extra Life's Settings or in iOS Settings.

Notifications

All reminders are scheduled on your iPhone. There is no notification server. Answering a reminder only updates your log on the device.

Apple Health (water)

Connecting Apple Health is optional and off until you turn it on in Extra Life's Settings. When it is on, Extra Life saves the water you log to Apple Health and reads water other apps have logged, so it counts towards your daily target. It asks only for water, nothing else in Health. Health data is read and written on your iPhone and is never sent to the developer or anyone else. You can turn this off in Extra Life's Settings or change access in the Health app.

Apple Health (sleep)

Reading sleep from Apple Health is optional and off until you turn it on in the Sleep section of Extra Life's Settings. When it is on, Extra Life reads your sleep from Health (from your watch or a sleep app) to show last night against your target. It only reads sleep and writes nothing to Health. Health data is read on your iPhone and is never sent to the developer or anyone else. You can turn this off in Extra Life's Settings or change access in the Health app.

Apple Health (exercise)

Reading exercise from Apple Health is optional and off until you turn it on in the Exercise section of Extra Life's Settings. When it is on, Extra Life reads your workouts and Apple Watch exercise minutes from Health so they count towards your daily exercise target. It only reads them and writes nothing to Health. Health data is read on your iPhone and is never sent to the developer or anyone else. You can turn this off in Extra Life's Settings or change access in the Health app.

Play with friends (Game Center)

Play with friends is optional and off until you turn it on in Extra Life's Settings. When it is on, Extra Life signs in to Apple's Game Center with your Game Center account and sends it these numbers: your current streak (shown as "windows won"), your current streak of days on target for each of exercise, eating well, water and sleep, how many gym sessions you have ticked this week, how many days this week you hit your exercise, eating well and water targets and how many nights this week you hit your sleep target. It also unlocks the 30, 60 and 90 windows won achievements. Nothing on Game Center says what a window is: no mention of alcohol, drinking or your log. Your Game Center friends can see those numbers. Extra Life shows you theirs so you can pick a crew of up to two friends. The friends you pick are saved in your private iCloud like the rest of your settings.

Game Center is run by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. The developer never receives these scores. Turning Play with friends off stops all updates straight away. Scores already sent stay on Game Center until you remove them there (iOS Settings, Game Center).

Under "What friends see" in Extra Life's Settings you can switch off any of those scores. Nothing new is sent to a score that is off. Windows won stays on while you are in a crew, because the crew streak is worked out from it.

Getting support and sharing

The "Getting support" list in Settings shows helplines. Tapping one opens your phone app or the service's website in Safari; Extra Life sends nothing to the service and never knows you tapped it. The share card is an image made on your iPhone; it goes only where you choose to send it from the share sheet.

Subscription

Extra Life's subscription is sold and managed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles payment under its own terms and privacy policy. The app checks on your iPhone whether you have access; the developer receives no payment details and nothing that identifies you, only the sales reports Apple gives every developer.

Siri, Shortcuts and Check in

Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight, the Action Button and the Control Centre controls run Extra Life's own actions on your iPhone, such as logging tonight or adding water. Extra Life sends nothing to the developer when you use them. "Check in" on the Crew tab opens Messages with a line already written and no recipient; nothing is sent unless you choose someone and press Send.

Update check

Once a day Extra Life asks Apple's App Store whether a newer version is out, so it can offer you the update. The request contains only the app's identifier and your App Store country. None of your data is sent. The developer never sees the request.

What Extra Life does not do

Your control

You can view and change any day in the app's Log. To delete everything, delete the app, then remove Extra Life's data from iCloud in iOS Settings under your name, iCloud, then Manage Storage.

Who Extra Life is for

Extra Life is about alcohol and is intended for adults aged 18 and over. It is a habit tool, not medical advice. If you drink heavily, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. See a doctor before you start.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
